The pictures are everyday words young children already say, and every vowel picture starts with its short vowel sound (ant, egg, igloo, ox, umbrella). Each picture has a matching word card for a second round of sorting.

Use the 2- and 3-sound sort mats in centers or small groups, then have students show what they sorted on a recording sheet. The answer key shows every picture with its word.
