Fundations®-Aligned Decodable Nonfiction Book · Level 1 Unit 12: Magnets

A 12-page decodable nonfiction book for Fundations® Level 1, Unit 12: Magnets. It tells real facts about magnets: what a magnet can pull, poles that stick or push, and how a compass works. The book is decodable: it uses only the sounds taught up to this unit, plus trick words from earlier units and this unit's new trick words, so students can read it on their own.

Every one of the 12 story pages has a watercolor picture and a few short sentences (20–40 words). After the story come 7 activity pages: Think About It (5 multiple-choice comprehension questions), Write About It (3 questions with lines for full-sentence answers), and 5 word-work pages for this unit's sounds: sort words, mark up words, make new words, trick words (color the heart over the tricky part) and Fix the Mix (put the words of a story sentence in order, then write a sentence of your own). A 1-page answer key gives the answers and sample sentences.

In this unit — Skill: Two-syllable and compound words. Sounds: Two-syllable words, -ic, compounds, Mr. and Mrs.. New trick words: people, month, been, little, own, want, Mr., Mrs.. These are in bold in the book.

Use it right after the unit's lessons for small-group reading, independent reading, a comprehension check, take-home reading or word-work practice. Print the book and read the story, then use the pages after it. The story, the questions, the word work and the answer key come in one PDF (23 pages).
