Fundations®-Aligned Maze Passages · Level 2 Unit 1

8 one-page maze passages for Fundations® Level 2, Unit 1: four for each week of the unit (two weeks), 4 stories and 4 short nonfiction passages. Every word is decodable through the last lesson day of its week or is a taught trick word, so students can read each maze on their own right after that week's lessons.

A maze is a short passage with a missing word about every seventh word; the first sentence is left whole. At each gap the student sees three words stacked in a small box: one fits, one is a real word that does not make sense there, and one does not fit the grammar. The student reads silently and circles the word that fits. It is a quick check of reading fluency and comprehension.

Use four mazes a week. Give each one after that week's lessons: hand it out face up, read the directions together, and time 3 minutes while students read silently and circle one word in each box. Each passage is 121–129 words with 17–18 boxes. A key page for every passage shows the answers with the same line breaks as the student page. On the weekly scoring page you record correct, errors and score (correct minus errors) for all four passages, and students chart each score on the progress graph, which has a column for every passage in the unit.

• Week 2 (Days 6–9): Jim and the Big Fish (story); Bats at Dusk (nonfiction); The Red Cap (story); Fox Cubs in a Den (nonfiction)

In this unit — Skill: Review: short vowels, digraphs, blends. Sounds: Closed syllables, digraphs, blends, digraph blends, c / k / ck. New trick words: none new in this unit (the passages use review trick words from earlier units).

It comes in two editions, Color and Printer-Friendly (one PDF each, 21 pages: a how-to page for teachers after the cover, then each week's four mazes, their answer keys and the scoring page, and the progress graph). Student pages have no example or pre-circled answer.
